Mulder

Who Is Mulder?
An FBI agent who's obsession with the paranormal bought him a one way ticket to an office in the basement and made him the laughing stock of the entire bureau. We are Owen Wynn Rees and Alex Elbery; a couple of kids from the hills that make beats and write songs.

Why the name?
We too, are in never-ceasing pursuit of the truth.

What draws me to Mulder is the power of the lyrics, and that even if in a live atmosphere those lyrics might not be crystal clear, the feeling behind them isn't lost.
Firstly, who are your favorite lyricists and secondly what has influenced this melodramatic and powerful sound that Mulder capture?
Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush are massive influences in terms of their theatricality, that's something we're really turned on by. In terms of lyrics, Kanye West and Bright Eyes would probably be our two biggest influences purely for their unashamed honestly. We freaking love musicals, too.

Do you envision Mulder as a recording entity first or do you prefer to play live?

We love doing both, for completely different reasons. Making music on your laptop is a really personal process. It's a total pleasure to take that though, and be able to share it with a live audience.

If you could collaborate with anyone dead or alive, who would it be and why?

Owen: Flying Lotus has been playing through my sound system forever. He just makes these massive landscapes with his music. I like concept music and not many other producers out there can just create self contained moods like that. Probably deftones as well for similar reasons. Chino's got such a haunting voice and they just make these big walls of sound that give me a total boner.
Alex: Kanye West, because I think he's the most honest and original songwriter alive today. Or Mel Brooks because he's freaking Mel Brooks!

What do you make of the local music scene and what do you think it needs for it to improve?
We think there's an incredible amount of talent in Perth and a whole bunch of people doing some really interesting and creative things. On the whole though, we think more people need to follow their instincts and do what they want to do rather than what they think will buy them a ticket out of Perth.

Who is your favorite local act at the moment?

We got a couple. The Brow Horn Orchestra because their energy is off the hook. The Painkillers because they're raw as fuck.

Recommend the Fat Shan crew a record and explain why you chose this particular record.

Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy we know it was pretty much the most popular album of last year but it's also the most honest, self contained work of art of the past 20 years. And we can really get behind a lyricist who doesn't mind sounding like a weirdo and says what he wants regardless of how perverse and embarrassing it may be. Plus the production is flawless.

The best thing you have ever been apart of was..?

Eastern Hills Senior High School battle of the bands '04. Owens band the Marionette was up against Alexs band Plague and tensions were freaking high. Plague got through to the finals because their parents called up the organises and complained.

Apart from that, we're currently working on a night were Perth bands play songs from musicals. It's gonna be at the Rosemount on Oct 29th and it is going to be insanely entertaining. Mulder will be doing the Wizard of Oz.

What
can we expect from Mulder moving into the future?
A fuck tonne more songs, a fuck tonne more shows and a fuck tonne more costumes and unsettling dances. And a fuck tonne more homosexual tension. Plus a short film and a record.
