Who are you?

The last person in the world who should be interviewed, but during my off time I sing for largely “Mario party” inspired group “The Tumblers”.

Give us a quick brief rundown of who you are musically and what you try and do differently.

We started out a couple of years ago when we all went to Aquinas college as a largely white stripes and muse inspired garage rock band, but after playing together for so long we sort of got tired of that and started to draw largely from other genres and non-musical formats. I’m still not too sure whether the way and the music we play now is quite where we want to be but it seems the more we play gamecube and jam the closer we get.

Who would be some key influences are that people wouldn’t expect?

A big one for me would be Fryderyk Chopin, Andy is really digging Tobacco at the moment…Dan is pretty into anything super math and with screaming, and Lee listens to mass effect 2 soundtrack a heap. The influences always change and I guess I could talk about them all day but I have forgotten everyone else’s right now and don’t really want to sound like even more of a dickhead.

In “Almost Famous” honour, “do you have to be sad to write a sad song, do you have to be in love to write a love song?”

God knows it helps, but I don’t find it true at all. You don’t have to be sad to recount the not so great things that have happened in life and then to draw influence from them for your songs. On the topic of love songs, most love songs that are written whilst in love aren’t really too accurate or true.

If you put a song of affection on display and the person you are love with is going to hear it and more than likely analyse it, you cant really talk about all the things that actually make love what it is. You cant talk about how sometimes every single thing they do pisses you off but you still love them anyway, actually come to think of it, I would like to hear a song where the person just lists the things that they either hate about their partner or that really piss them off one by one, and then finish the song by saying “I put up with all these things because I quite love you” romance 101 by The Tumblers.

What is your opinion on the current music scene in Perth?

The Perth music scene is absolutely killing it at the moment, Abbe May just got played on Entourage, Sonpsilo Circus just released an amazing EP and are getting J rotation, The Novocaines just got that US management deal, Sam Perry is playing at Parklife. I don’t even know hey, those are just the major sort of things. You still have your Hideous Sun Demon, Ruby Boots, James Teague, Fat Jackal, Love Junkies, Puck, Sugarpuss, Big Old Bears… so yeah, Perth is pretty ridiculous at the moment

If you had to put together your dream gig with any 5 bands from history + 5 local bands who would they be?

Far out, I’m just going to answer this as if we were already on the bill as hopefully it will make it easier, also I’m lazy and want to somehow put on this rockish lineup

Local:  Fat Jackal,  Hideous Sun Demon, The Novocaines,  Abbe May &  Puck

History: The Raconteurs,  Radiohead,  Beck,  Bangs,  The Doors

What is the most annoying/difficult question to be asked in an interview?

If you had to put together your dream gig with any 5 bands from history + 5 local bands who would they be?

What are your plans for the next 6 - 12 months

The main goal is to work as hard as we possibly can, but I guess we have a single called “Gentleman” coming out real soon and then the EP after that. Hopefully play with some rad bands, tour places, have a great time, and beat our high scores on Mario party.
