Tangled Thoughts of Leaving; Tiny Fragments

By Rodiyah Fiedorowicz

Lovers of schizophrenic rock will adore this offering from Perth band Tangled Thoughts of Leaving, with stripped-back vocals and melodic riffs reverberating with a metal edge. As this album confirms, these lads are no one-trick-pony; their blend of experimental samples and heavy keys make for genre-defiant listening.

The opening track, ‘Tiny Fragments Part One,’bought back memories of the creatively convoluted jazz sounds championed by Mr Bungle in the early 90’s. The band make it their own by seamlessly blending the key elements of post-rock and, on occasion, a range of hypnotic drones and bells.

As the album progresses it reveals layer upon layer of complex sound scapes; delicate harmonies play alongside aggressive guitar parts.  The third track, ‘Tiny Fragments Part Three,’ is crafted with just enough clever changes in rhythm and tempo to avoid the listener losing interest, despite the generous eight minute track length. ‘The Banshee’ marks the close to the EP in a whirlwind of noise, samples and drums.

Tiny Fragments whips the listener into a frenzy from the word go, each number bringing its own unique energy to the forefront. Tangled Thoughts of Leaving are an outfit to enjoy for each subtle change, keeping you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.
